This M5 has a few more miles than most... I'll just leave it at that.
For the price of a gently used V6 Mustang, is it worth it?

No. Except you have a good warranty or enough money for another V6 mustang for maintenance then i say okay

a 3 series of that era is expensive to maintain, so an M5 would be worse.

There are tons of E90 M3s with less mileage that may even be on warranty. Its got a V8 N/A. Just ask Rusto. He is the expert in all things M.
This is what the M5 forum has to say (many more forums to check out but I like this one): http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60-…

I actually drive a 2007 328i, not very expensive to maintain at all. More expensive than a Civic? Sure, but it's definitely not bleeding out my bank account.

My father complains a lot, and calls his 330xi a "money pit", but he loves tinkering with it more than other cars, and wants me to inherit the car when he buys a new one.

I'm not interested in buying this, it was just an interesting find on CL as it's the highest mileage E60 M5 I've seen.
Also, You can't find an E9x M3 for the same price, trust me I check every day!!

The V10 is awesome but these are notorious bottomless money pits.

Would a gently used Mustang V6 be less than 30k?

not a bad car to inherit! I didn't want to go for an X-drive car because that would just be more parts to maintain. That's the thing with BMW's, even though they may give headaches you just enjoy them too much to care! That's why I'm constantly shopping for an older, less reliable BMW haha.

Damn, I need to get check out a whole bunch of used car sites immediately. Last time I checked they were around 28-33k. How the hell is someone supposed to by a car nowadays with so many great used or new choices.

$23k for a manual transmission Mustang with a leather interior. Brand new! The options are ridiculous if you have $30k.

I don't ride so luckily I'm not spending all my money filling my backyard with project bikes, but I've been getting the M car urge so bad recently!! Z4M's are getting crazy cheap these days...

Looks like it was well maintained, but a lot of the work was done a while ago, so it might be due again. And that's some $$$.
Having come really close to buying one, and deciding on an E39 instead, I'll advise that you thoroughly drive one before buying. Especially one with the SMG.
The short-stroke 5.0L V10 doesn't have much torque until you get it up past 5500RPM. Around town my E60 535i felt just as fast. So to get the power out of it you have to ring the shit out of the motor, which is fun to hear it scream, but not something you do around town. The E39 M5 has much more low-end torque so you get that thrust just pulling off the line. It just "feels" faster in every day use.
For me, the SMG is too weird and a pain to get used to. I've chatted extensively with the E60 owners on M5Board and they all say it takes some getting used to. It's not like driving a regular automatic since there is a computer controlled clutch. So when you want to move forward in first gear, it won't creep forward until you push the gas, and when you do you can feel the clutch carefully engage. It's also not smart enough to shift faster or slower depending on the situation. There's a setting (1-5) for the shift severity. You want 1-2 around town for nice, easy shifts, but higher up as your use of the accelerator increases. So if you need to gun it (like getting on the freeway) you better put the shift mode in 5, otherwise it will shift so slow that you'll get thrown forward in your seat from the clutch taking so long to go out and in again. Not kidding about that. I had it in 3, and got sea sick trying to get it on the freeway.
So if you'd prefer an E60 over an E39, I'd say keep an eye out for a manual. They're rare, but out there. Otherwise, for $19K you can get an E39 with less miles and in great shape. Maintenance and repairs are also cheaper.

Yeah I'm familiar with all that, and the first M5 I'll buy is an E39.
I'm not interested in buying this car, just an interesting craigslist find!
